Abstract

In nine conversational (rather than academic) essays, the author shares specific language and concepts drawn from his study of Bartenieff Fundamentals (BF) and functional anatomy that he finds particularly useful in the teaching of dance techniques. He mentions the influence of Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, creator of the somatic system known as Body-Mind Centering,on the recent development of BF and the influence of Eric Franklin, creator of the Franklin Method of Dynamic Alignment,on his own understanding of bone rhythms. Specific topics addressed include: lung and cellular respiration; the essentiality of breath support in Mr. Evans’ style of dance; the concepts of “Throughness” and body-part phrasing in BF; asymmetrical body sides; and mistaken and more appropriate ideas about plié,turn-out and turn-in. This chapter concludes with questions designed to guide readers into investigation of their own body awareness and movement.
