Abstract

To the Editor:— Dr. Henry D. Friedman's letter to the editor ( JAMA 177 :276 [July 29] 1961) contained a false premise; that is, that blowing a wind instrument will cause increased pressure in the nasopharynx and thus produce a Valsalva maneuver. In blowing an instrument, the palate closes off the nasopharynx and thus the increased pressure is not transmitted to the eustachian tubes. As an oboe player and an otolaryngologist, I can speak from my own experience and believe that any concern over middle ear complications being caused by blowing an instrument during an upper respiratory infection is superfluous.
