Abstract

It is shown that in the case of an infinite crystal the model of a Bloch electron in a rational step-like electric potential is not equivalent to a one-band approximation, in contradiction to reports in the literature. Instead, such a potential has effects similar to those of a uniform electric field, which it approaches as the steps become smaller.
