Abstract
The article is an attempt to reconstruct the origins of Leopold Buczkowski’s novel Black Torrent(Czarny potok). The author, utilizing the method of genetic criticism, analyzes the genesis documentsof Black Torrent: a typescript titled Rafał Bajc, Buczkowski’s wartime diaries, as well as the novel’smanuscripts and typescripts. Based on the fi ndings of Sławomir Buryła – sometimes engagingin a polemic with them – the article showcases the evolution of Buczkowski’s poetics, his views onautobiographism in literature, as well as his ethical stance towards the Holocaust.
