Abstract
t is important to increase drilling speed and reduce drilling costs that select the rational bit. A common method is used to select bit types based on the rock mechanical parameters of the drillability. The rock mechanical parameters which are the compressive strength, shear strength, rock hardness and abrasiveness have been not considered during select bit types of carbonate formation, so that the selected bit types are not practical. The rock mechanical parameters of indoor test are costly, and the data points are not continuous. In view of this, these rock mechanical parameters are calculated using logging data that reflect the rich rock mechanical properties. Combined with the manufacturers instructions of bit types, these rock mechanics parameters were clustered using fuzzy clustering method, and then the bit types are selected according to the clustering results. This method was applied to the bit selection of carbonate formation in the eastern of Sichuan, the results show that this method can effectively select bit types of the carbonate section.
