Abstract

We report on observations of optical bistability (OB) and self-pulsing (SP) using prism couplers on ZnS and ZnSe planar waveguides. In the SP mode the systems produce for constant input power P an output power varying periodically with time t. Since the waveguides are strongly absorbing, we monitored as output that part P-P’(t) of the incident power P, which is not coupled into the waveguide and which is reflected from the prism coupler; P’(t) being the incoupled (and absorbed) power (see Fig.l).
