Abstract

Abstract A list of birds injurious to crops in the sahelian, Guinean and humid zones of West Africa has been compiled from a survey of 51 publications. In all, 36 species have been found feeding on crops; taking into account the amount of specifically attributed damage and the number of citations, the most important are Quelea quelea (U, Ploceus cucullatus (Müller), Quelea erythrops (Hartlaub), Passer luteus (Lichtenstein) and Ploceus melanocephalus (L). Calculations based on 32 studies reporting damage in 626 plots suggest an average loss of 6.9% of the cereal harvest; the most serious damage is to millet in the sahelian zone (24.6%) and rice in the humid zone (18.8%). Damage is least in November and December. Fields within 10 km of water are more frequently damaged than those further away.
