Abstract
As renewable energy sources gain increasing relevance on the establishment of a sustainable society in the near future, electrochemical devices such as redox flow batteries, fuel cells and electrolyzers draw much attention as potential clean technologies for energy storage and generation. The vital functions played by bipolar plates in these devices, make its development one of the most important technological quests for optimization the electrical performance. In this chapter, the current knowledge of bipolar plate materials are reviewed. Future prospects are discussed based on the interaction between materials properties and bipolar plate design.
