Abstract
Bipolar diffusion charging of monodisperse aerosol particles in the size range between 0.5 and 2 μm in diameter was studied. Due to the different values of the physical parameters for negative and positive ions different fractions of positively and negatively charged particles in charge equilibrium were measured. In addition different stationary state charge distributions were obtained using two different bipolar ion sources: one with equal negative ( n −) and positive ( n +) ion concentrations, n + = n −; the other with an ion concentration ratio of about n +/ n − = 1.21. The measured values can be described by means of the diffusion charging theory of Fuchs.
