Abstract

The presence of neuraminic acid-containing glycosphingolipids (gangliosides) in mammalian (1–5) and avian (6) tissues has been known for the last 40 years. Recently the chemical structures of 20 different gangliosides isolated from neural (7–9) and non-neural (10–12) tissues have been elucidated. In addition to the hexosaminefree and N-acetylgalactosamine-containing gangliosides, the structures of at least 3 different gangliosides (13–18) containing nLcOse4Cer (Gal(β1–4)G1cNAc(β1–3)Gal(β1–4) Glc-Ceramide) as the core structure have been reported by several laboratories.KeywordsSialic AcidMembrane FractionIncubation MixtureSodium TaurocholateChicken BrainThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
