Abstract

The vertical dimension may be altered purposefully or unintentionally during therapy by dental extrusion, intrusion, growth modification, or orthognathic surgery. Vertical changes result in the mandible rotating either open or closed with corresponding alterations in interarch dental relationships, facial esthetics, and lip and tongue function. The biomechanics involved in the treatment of patients who exhibit an anterior open bite or a deep overbite related to excessive or deficient vertical facial dimensions are discussed.
