Abstract
SUMMARY The potential of alley cropping was explored on calcareous alluvial soils of the mid-Indio-Gangetic Plains of Bihar. The study involved two alley widths (2 and 3 m) and two intra-row spacings (25 and 50 cm) of Leucaena leucocephala. Maize, wheat and green gram were cultivated in alleys 12 months after establishment. The hedgerows were pruned every six months. Forage and wood yields were highest in the narrow alleys while grain production was highest in the wide alleys. The decline in grain yield was highest for green gram and lowest for maize.
