Abstract

Information is presented on the life history of the common marsh fly Atrichomelina pubera (Loew), the larvae of which kill and consume aquatic, pulmonate snails of various species. Stress is laid on feeding methods of the larvae, seasonal aspects, parasitoid Hymenoptera, and other ethological and ecological considerations. Distribution of the species is given. Descriptions and figures are presented of the egg, three larval instars, and puparia. Morphological characteristics that may be diagnostic for sciomyzid larvae in general are suggested.
