Abstract

The impact of Pardosa ramulosa (McCook) on selected prey species in rice Was evaluated in field experiments where P. ramulosa densities were physically manipulated in small plots. P. ramulosa significantly reduced the number of adult midges collected in floating emergence traps, and when confined in metal rings placed in patches of aquatic broadleaf weeds in the paddy, reduced densities of aster leafhopper, Macrosteles fascifrons Stal, by 84 to 96% compared with the control. No further significant reduction in aster leafhopper density was achieved by adding more than 22 spiders per m2. This was probably the result of greater spider mortality associated with higher spider densities. P. ramulosa may help prevent aster leafhopper outbreaks in rice.
