Abstract
Queen replacement in Melipona quadrifasciata is described for the first time and the observed data are compared with those obtained by experimentally removing the physogastric queen of M. quadrifasciata and M. quinquefasciata from the hive. A behavioural account of virgin queens, including the subsequent ethological patterns following her mating and intergration in the hive, is given. Artificial insemination in Melipona queens is possible and some data on the biology of the sperms were obtained.
