Abstract

Elie van Rijckevorsel was born at Rotterdam, Holland, the 22d of March, 1845. After attending for two years the lectures at the “Eidgenössische Polytechnikum” at Zürich, he completed his studies at the universities of Bonn and Utrecht, He took the degree of “mat. mag. atque phil. nat. Dr.” at the latter university in 1872.Except that he was made an honorary observer of the Royal Meteorological Institute of the Netherlands, he never had any official appointment. Through the mighty influence of the great Buys Ballot, van Rijckevorsel's activity was soon directed to the study of meteorology, and more especially of terrestrial magnetism.
