Biofuel use assessments in Africa: Implications for greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation strategies

The energy balances of most African countries suggest that biofuels (woodfuel, crop and wood residues, and dung) constitute the largest share of total energy consumption (up to 97% in some sub-Saharan Africa countries). There is, however, an increasing scarcity of woodfuel (fuelwood and charcoal), the major biofuel, and a feared increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with biofuel combustion. The extent of GHG emissions is estimated from biofuel consumption levels that are in turn based on methodologies that might be inaccurate. A questionnaire, supplemented by informal interviews, are used to collect data, yielding information regarding end-uses, technologies used, scale of consumption, determinants of fuel consumption, and interfuel substitution (among other parameters). The survey revealed that cooking is the major end-use, with other common uses, such as space and water heating. Improved stoves that provide better combustion efficiency and, thus, reduce woodfuel consumption have not been widely disseminated and are associated with higher methane emissions than open fires. More than 90% of the households in Africa use open fires. Consumption is presented as per capita for households and as products and quantity of fuel in the small scale industries, commercial, and public sectors. Among the determinants for biofuel consumption are affordability, availability of the fuel, and interfuel substitutions. Flaws in estimating biofuel consumption yield large uncertainties in GHG emissions, with implications for the development of policies on energy planning and environmental protection. However, the application of scenarios can guide policy formulation.

IN the near future, the energy sector may have to use alternatives to fossil fuels to reduce life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Biomass-derived energy is one potential pathway to achieving this objective. However, the GHG-intensity of biomass-based energy is highly dependent on how the biomass is produced, transported, processed, and converted into liquid fuels or electricity. Thus, uncertainty in the actual upstream GHG emissions associated with a biomass feedstock or process could lead to the adoption of government policies and industrial practices that increase expenditures but yield only marginal GHG emissions reductions, if any. To understand the implications of biomass use on the GHG-intensity of the energy system, it is important to assess these uncertainties and to incorporate them into estimates of GHG emissions [1].

Analysis of change in relative uncertainty in GHG emissions from stationary sources for the EU 15

Total uncertainty in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions changes over time due to “learning” and structural changes in GHG emissions. Understanding the uncertainty in GHG emissions over time is very important to better communicate uncertainty and to improve the setting of emission targets in the future. This is a diagnostic study divided into two parts. The first part analyses the historical change in the total uncertainty of CO2 emissions from stationary sources that the member states estimate annually in their national inventory reports. The second part presents examples of changes in total uncertainty due to structural changes in GHG emissions considering the GAINS (Greenhouse Gas and Air Pollution Interactions and Synergies) emissions scenarios that are consistent with the EU’s “20-20-20” targets. The estimates of total uncertainty for the year 2020 are made under assumptions that relative uncertainties of GHG emissions by sector do not change in time, and with possible future uncertainty reductions for non-CO2 emissions, which are characterized by high relative uncertainty. This diagnostic exercise shows that a driving factor of change in total uncertainty is increased knowledge of inventory processes in the past and prospective future. However, for individual countries and longer periods, structural changes in emissions could significantly influence the total uncertainty in relative terms.

Challenges and opportunities for enhancing food security and greenhouse gas mitigation in smallholder farming in sub-Saharan Africa. A review

Smallholder farmers struggle to achieve food security in many countries of sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It is urgently required to find appropriate practices for enhancing crop production while avoiding large increases in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in SSA. This review aims to identify common smallholder farming practices for enhancing crop production, to assess how these affect GHG emissions and to identify strategies that not only enhance crop production but also mitigate GHG emissions in SSA. To increase crop production and ensure food security, smallholder farmers usually expand agricultural land, develop water harvesting and irrigation techniques and increase cropping intensity and fertilizer use. These practices may result in changing carbon stocks and GHG emissions, potentially creating trade-offs between food security and GHG mitigation. Agricultural land expansion at the expense of forests is the most dominant source of GHG emissions in SSA. While water harvesting and irrigation can increase soil organic carbon, they can trigger GHG emissions. Increasing cropping intensity can enhance the decomposition of soil organic matter, thus releasing carbon dioxide. Increasing nitrogen fertilizer use can enhance soil organic carbon, but also leads to increasing nitrous oxide emissions. An integrated land, water and nutrient management strategy is necessary to enhance crop production and mitigate GHG emissions. Among the most relevant strategies found, agroforesty practices in degraded and marginal lands could replace expanding agricultural croplands. In addition, water management, via adequate rainwater harvesting and irrigation techniques, together with appropriate nutrient management should be considered. Therefore, a land-water-nutrient nexus (LWNN) approach will enable an integrated and sustainable solution to increasing crop production and mitigating GHG emissions. Various technical, economic and policy barriers hinder implementing the LWNN approach on the ground, but these may be overcome through developing appropriate technologies, disseminating them through farmer to farmer approaches and developing specific policies to address smallholder land tenure issues and motivate long-term investment.

Comprehensive Numerical Modeling of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Water Resource Recovery Facilities.

A numerical model was developed to comprehensively predict greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from water resource recovery facilities. An existing activated sludge model was extended to include a nitrifier-denitrification process and carbon dioxide (CO₂) as a state variable. The bioreactor model was coupled to a process-based digester model and an empirical model of indirect CO₂emissions. Direct emissions were approximately 90% of total GHG emissions for a plantwide simulation using the Modified Ludzack-Ettinger process. Biogenic CO₂, nitrous oxide (N₂O), and methane (CH₄) represented 10, 43, and 34% of total emissions. Simulating a dissolved oxygen controlled closed-loop system reduced both sensitivity and uncertainty of GHG emissions. Nitrous oxide emissions were much more sensitive under different design and operating conditions compared to CH₄and CO₂, indicating a significant mitigation potential. An uncertainty analysis found that the uncertainty in GHGs emissions estimates could be significant. Nitrous oxide emissions dominated in both magnitude and uncertainty.

The increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is a global concern due to its impact on climate change. To address this challenge, the development of corporate GHG inventories is crucial, enabling organizations to understand and mitigate their emissions. This study aims to statistically analyze whether there was a significant increase in GHG emissions over a 10-year period by organizations from various sectors of the economy that voluntarily published their inventories in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. Data were obtained from the inventories of 66 organizations that published at 2013 and 2022 in the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. The data was processed and analyzed using Minitab software to determine the significance level of the increase in GHG emissions. A total increase of 159,264,734.26 tCO2e in GHG emissions was observed from 2013 to 2022, with 29 organizations reporting higher emissions and 37 showing reductions. However, statistical analysis demonstrated that there was no significant increase in GHG emissions over the study period. The results highlight the importance of organizations conducting their GHG inventories to enhance transparency and make strategic decisions aimed at mitigating their emissions. Publishing inventories allows for monitoring progress and identifying priority areas for effective interventions. No significant increase in GHG emissions was observed over the 10-year period; therefore, this study reinforces the importance of preparing GHG inventories by organizations. The findings can impact public policies on climate change, supporting the introduction of regulations that mandate the development of inventories and the setting of emission reduction and offsetting targets.

Nitrous oxide and methane emissions from cattle manure heaps in Kenya

<p>Agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Africa contribute 15 % to the global total agricultural emissions, which is in the same range as agricultural emissions from Europe. The majority of these agricultural GHG emissions is attributed to livestock farming (up to 80 % at national scale), of which 10-25 % originate from livestock manure. At the same time, livestock production is essential for the livelihoods of millions of people in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where 45-80 % of livestock production occurs in smallholder systems. With the growing population in SSA, the demand for livestock products is expected to increase, and – without low-emission manure management – a rise in manure-borne GHG emissions will occur. However, reliable <em>in situ</em> measurements from SSA are scarce, leading to substantial uncertainties in agricultural GHG budgets and making assessments of potential mitigation options difficult.</p><p>Here we present results from two cattle manure incubation experiments in Kenya, using manure from Boran (<em>Bos indicus</em>) cattle, a breed common in East Africa that were fed with typical feeds used in SSA smallholder farms. Manure was collected and piled in heaps (solid storage), the most common form of manure storage in Kenyan smallholder systems, and CH<sub>4</sub> and N<sub>2</sub>O emissions were measured over 140 days. In the first trial, cattle were fed a diet that either met their maintenance-energy requirements (i.e. animals received enough food to support their metabolism), or a diet at sub-maintenance energy levels to simulate common conditions in smallholder farming systems, particularly during the dry seasons. Cumulative manure N<sub>2</sub>O emissions from the sub-maintenance diet (i.e. the “hungry” cows) were lower than from cattle fed at maintenance energy levels. These lower N<sub>2</sub>O emission likely resulted from lower N concentration and a wider C:N ratio in the manure than in the “better fed” animals. Furthermore, the urine-N:faecal-N ratio in the “hungry” cows decreased, indicating a shift from urine-N (mostly inorganic N) to faecal-N (mostly organic N), which further backs the lower observed N<sub>2</sub>O emissions. Both N<sub>2</sub>O as well as CH<sub>4</sub> emissions from manure were lower than the IPCC default emission factors for solid storage in tropical regions across all diets tested.</p><p>In the second trial, Boran cattle were fed with three different tropical forage grasses common in Kenya: Napier (<em>Pennisetum purpureum</em>), Rhodes (<em>Gloris gayana</em>), and Brachiaria (<em>Brachiaria brizantha</em>). Manure from the Rhodes grass diet had the lowest N concentration and also the lowest cumulative CH<sub>4</sub> emissions, while N<sub>2</sub>O emissions did not differ between diets. Similar to the sub-maintenance feeding trial, total CH<sub>4</sub> and N<sub>2</sub>O emissions were lower than the IPCC default factors. Taken together, these results are an important step towards reducing the uncertainties in GHG emissions from agriculture in SSA. Furthermore, if African nations use IPCC default values for their national GHG reporting on livestock, emissions are likely to be overestimated, highlighting the importance and benefits of localized data from Africa.</p>

Peat Production in High-Emission Level Peatlands — A Key to Reducing Climatic Impacts?

Both peat utilization and peatlands themselves contribute to increases in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This article examines how peatlands with naturally high GHG emission levels affect net GHG emissions during the life cycle of peat. GHG emissions were measured from three drained peatland sites with high GHG emission levels. The impact of peatland type on the GHG emissions was considered when peat was assumed to replace coal in an energy production facility. The emission reduction levels achieved with the use of peat fuel originating from high-emission level peatlands stood at 35% compared to coal use and 30% compared to the average peat emission value. The findings indicate that GHG emissions can be reduced overall when peat from high-emission peatlands is utilized instead of coal. Lower emissions are primarily achieved because the harvesting of peat from high-emission level peatlands reduces the GHG emission levels of those lands.

Life Cycle Economic and Environmental Implications of Pristine High Density Polyethylene and Alternative Materials in Drainage Pipe Applications

A life cycle assessment (LCA) and cost analysis were conducted to compare the environmental and economic performance of nanocomposite polymers that use pristine and recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) polymer with pristine, and pristine/recycled HDPE polymeric materials in drainage pipe. We evaluate three performance metrics; (a) non-renewable energy consumption (NRE); (b) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions; and (c) production costs of the three pipe material alternatives. Original life cycle inventory data for the production of nanoclay from the mineral Montmorillonite were collected for this case study in the United States. Life cycle inventory models were developed for the cradle-to-gate production of drainage pipe used in highway construction that consider the sensitivity of model parameter inputs on the life cycle impact and cost results for the three material options. The GHG emissions for the nanoclay composite pipe are 54 % lower than those for pristine HDPE pipe, and 16 % lower than those for pristine/recycle HDPE pipe. With a slight difference in GHG emissions between the pristine/recycled and nanoclay composite, the production of nanoclay does not introduce a significant environmental burden to the pipe material. On average, the pristine HDPE pipe is 13 and 17 % higher in cost than the pristine/recycled HDPE and nanoclay composite pipes, respectively. Results of the LCA and cost analysis support using recycled HDPE as a substitute for pristine HDPE due to its low energy requirements and production costs. The uncertainty in GHG emissions of manufacturing pristine HDPE causes the largest variation of GHG emissions in nanoclay composite pipe (+3/−2 %). The production cost of the nanocomposite pipe is most influenced by the energy cost of PCR-HDPE (+25/−11 %). Our study suggests that a nanocomposite design that replaces part of the pristine HDPE with recycled HDPE and nanoclay reduces certain environmental risks and material cost of corrugated pipe.

Advancing agricultural greenhouse gas quantification*

Better information on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and mitigation potential in the agricultural sector is necessary to manage these emissions and identify responses that are consistent with the food security and economic development priorities of countries. Critical activity data (what crops or livestock are managed in what way) are poor or lacking for many agricultural systems, especially in developing countries. In addition, the currently available methods for quantifying emissions and mitigation are often too expensive or complex or not sufficiently user friendly for widespread use.The purpose of this focus issue is to capture the state of the art in quantifying greenhouse gases from agricultural systems, with the goal of better understanding our current capabilities and near-term potential for improvement, with particular attention to quantification issues relevant to smallholders in developing countries. This work is timely in light of international discussions and negotiations around how agriculture should be included in efforts to reduce and adapt to climate change impacts, and considering that significant climate financing to developing countries in post-2012 agreements may be linked to their increased ability to identify and report GHG emissions (Murphy et al 2010, CCAFS 2011, FAO 2011).

On the Development of a Stochastic Model to Mitigate Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Building and Transportation Sectors

Energy-related activities are a major contributor of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. A growing body of knowledge clearly depicts the links between human activities and climate change. Over the last century the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil and other human activities has released carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other heat-trapping GHG emissions into the atmosphere and thus increased the concentration of atmospheric CO2 emissions. Effect of soil mulching on agricultural greenhouse gas emissions in China: A meta-analysis

Human demand for food has been increasing as population grows around the world. Meanwhile, global temperature has been rising with the increase of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Although soil mulching (SM) is an effective method to increase crop yield because it could conserve soil moisture and temperature, it is also an important factor affecting GHG productions and emissions. At present, research results in terms of the impact of SM on agricultural GHG emissions are still inconsistent. Therefore, a meta-analysis was used to quantitatively analyze the impact of SM on crop yield and GHG emissions in China. Overall, SM significantly enhanced not only crop yield, but also GHG emissions. Compared with no soil mulching (NSM), SM improved crop yield by 21.84%, while increased global warming potential (GWP) by 11.38%. To minimize the negative impact of SM on GHG, for maize and wheat in arid, semi-arid and semi-humid zones, it is recommended to use flat full mulching with grave or straw plus drip irrigation under neutral or weakly alkaline soil with bulk density <1.3g cm-3. For rice in humid regions, it is advisable to apply SM to minimize GHG emissions by significantly decreasing CH4 emissions.
