Several authors have defined microalgae biomass as the raw material with the highest potential for meeting the goals of substituting biodiesel for petroleum diesel while not competing with arable land suitable for food production. Research groups in various countries are searching for the most appropriate production model for efficiency, economic viability, and sustainability. This review focused on recent developments and technical challenges and environmental aspects for microalgae biodiesel production.
