Abstract

Soluble and insoluble collagen fractions were isolated from the skin and bone of normal and lathyritic chick embryos varying times after injection of uniformly labeled l-proline-C 14. The amount and specific activity of the isolated hydroxyproline indicate that the excessive amounts of soluble collagen produced in the lathyritic embryo are largely newly synthesized. The data also show that collagen synthesis and breakdown are occurring more rapidly in the lathyritic state than in the normal.
