Abstract

Most of the herbs have a long history for treating diabetes, and among them Ivy gourd herb is a clean and green form of medicine with no side effects. It is easily accessible, affordable, and its consumption is a cost effective form of therapy to treat diabetes. Ivy gourd is being cultivated in some of the states of India like, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Maharashtra and Assam. The secondary data reports presence of bioactive compounds- triterpenoids and pectin in Ivy gourd. Triterpenoids prevent development of insulin resistance, whereas, pectin leads to lesser absorption of glucose from the small intestine. In the current study different parts of Ivy gourd herb, fruit, leaf, stem and root were analysed for various biochemical compounds. The analysis showed presence of good amount of triterpenoids and pectin in the fruit in comparison to other parts. Consumption of Ivy gourd fruit thus could be useful in lowering blood glucose level among diabetics.
