Abstract
4-Hydroxybutyrate (4-OHB) does not affect respiration of rat liver mitochondria, both endogenous and stimulated by 2-oxoglutarate, succinate and 3-hydroxybutyrate. On the contrary, 4-OHB does markedly depress oxygen consumption with glutamate, according to kinetics indicating an essentially non-competitive inhibition. The efficiency of phosphorylation coupled to oxidation was not affected by 4-OHB.
