Abstract
Plastics that are made from plants and bio-based sources or from recycled plastics can be considered sustainable plastics. Currently, bioplastics represent approximately 1% of the about 360 million tons of plastic produced. Bio-based polyethylene is currently available from Braskem and DOW Chemical Company. Life cycle assessment can be used to determine the environmental impacts of producing the bio-based polyethylene. Bio-based polypropylene can be produced from bio-based ethanol. Braskem produced ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) from sugarcane in 2018. The new bio-based EVA can be used to produce foot-ware. Recycled plastics can be produced with lower energy, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and lower pollution than conventional plastics since they are converting the recycled plastics into pellets and not polymerizing the plastic from petroleum or natural gas sources. Oxodegradable additives, typically transition metals, can be added to plastics to cause fragmentation in the plastic.
