Abstract
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has become the preferred surgical approach to symptomatic cholelithiasis. The most significant complication of this new technique is injury of the bile ducts. This review summarizes the incidence, diagnosis and endoscopic treatment of bile duct injuries occurring during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The role of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in visualizing the exact area of injury and the type of damage is analysed. Endoscopic therapy of biliary injuries including papillotomy and stent placement is also reviewed
