Abstract

The second, updated and expanded edition of this textbook provides an introduction to the sociology of education. It is also aimed at undergraduate students who do not study sociology as a major subject. The sociology of education provides substantial reference knowledge, in particular for future teachers and pedagogists, by examining the basic questions and concepts of the sociology of education. It gives an overview of the study of education systems and schools as organisations, while also illustrating the degree and causes of social, ethnic and gender-related inequalities in education. Its further chapters address recent challenges arising from the coronavirus crisis and digitalisation. Janna Teltemann is a professor of educational sociology at the University of Hildesheim.
