Abstract
A topological degree method is used to study the general bifurcation diagram in a system of diffusion-coupled boxes, with a nonequilibrium reaction scheme taking place in each box. Multiplicity of homogeneous steady states in the chemical scheme is shown to be a necessary condition for the appearance of nonhomogeneous steady states.
