Abstract
In February 1991 a new UK bibliographic data service was launched. It is believed to be a world first — a national citation database service accessible to thousands of academics and tens of thousands of students, and free at the point of delivery. The BIDS (Bath Information & Data Services) ISI Data Service provides access to citation data supplied by the Institute for Scientific Information. This paper reviews the background to the establishment of the BIDS ISI service, the methodology used in the design of the user interface, and the crucial role the UK's academic UK's academic network (JANET) played and continues to play in the development and production phases of the service.
