Abstract

Two new mixed ligand cobalt(III) complexes containing bibenzimidazole (bbenzimH2) ligand with composition [Co(phen)2bbenzimH2](ClO4)3 (1) and [Co(bpy)2bbenzimH2](ClO4)3 (2) have been synthesized and characterized using UV–Vis, Infrared, ESI-MS and cyclic voltammetric techniques. Both complexes 1 and 2 exhibited quasi-reversible electrochemical wave. The anion binding studies with these metallo-receptor complexes were carried out using UV–Vis and fluorescence spectroscopic titrations and complex 2 was found to be selective towards iodide anion. Though complex 2 possesses potential hydrogen bonding sites, namely –NH, it was found that the basic anions like F−, OH− and OAc− do not bring about any dramatic visual colorimetric changes. However, metallo-receptor 2 brings about vivid color change with iodide anion visually and this could be due to charge transfer transition via ion pair formation with iodide ion.
