Abstract

How did the missionaries and the Portuguese deal with native sexualities in general? What was it like to be an Indian and/or a gay during the Inquisition in Brazil? In this chapter, the authors analyze the literature written by the Jesuit missionaries and explorers (Jose de Anchieta, Jean de Lery, Manuel da Nobrega, Hans Staden, etc.) in colonial Brazil, which contains several reports of brutal deaths among gay natives in order to show them the “right way” to behave.
