Abstract

L. Septimius Severus, together with other members of the dynasty he founded, were very significant figures in 3rd-century history. The artistic developments of the age were also of pivotal importance. This paper considers the new ideas expressed on contemporary coins, medallions, and engraved gemstones and argues that they mark a fundamental change in the nature of Imperial representation.
