Abstract

In 1965 Bethel College, with help from The Nature Conservancy, acquired Sand Prairie Natural History Reservation in western Harvey County, Kansas, to be managed as a natural area for use in biological education and research. The tract is an 80 acre grassland in the Hutchinson Dune Tracts, a band of sand dunes in Rice, Reno and Harvey counties. The area is at the eastern edge of the Sand Prairie vegetative type (Kiichler, 1974, Ecology 55: 586-604). The soil consists of fine sands and loamy fine sands of the Dillwyn, Pratt and Tivoli series. The topography is hummock-like with poorly developed surface drainage. The floral list for the Reservation includes 297 species of vascular plants. Six rare species have been found on the Reservation including dwarf burhead (Echinodorus parvulus) and the fameflower Talinum rugospermum which have been recorded in Kansas only from this site. The vertebrate fauna recorded from the Reservation includes 4 species of fish, 8 species of amphibians, 21 species of reptiles, 160 species of birds and 23 species of mammals.
