Abstract

Nuclei of 186Re, 188Re and 194Ir have been polarized in iron at low temperatures. The angular distributions of electrons from the first-forbidden β-decays were observed as functions of particle energy, using Li drifted germanium detectors. The anisotropies of the γ-rays which de-excite the 2 + levels in the daughter nuclei were also measured. The information obtained is sufficient to permit an analysis for the nuclear matrix elements and possibly to use as a test of the conserved vector current hypothesis, but no detailed analysis has as yet been made. The β- particle angular distributions of the Re cases were in general agreement with previous results, but the experimental accuracy was greatly improved.
