Abstract
The vacancy left at the Jardin du roi by Vaillant’s death in May of 1722 was filled on 30 September of that year when Bernard de Jussieu assumed the position of sousdemonstrateur des plants. His elder brother, Antoine, Vaillant’s old rival, had arranged this more congenial appointment. While nepotism was so common in the 18th century as to make the appointment unexceptional, its novelty proved to be the striking competence of the appointee. In fact, a botanical dynasty was in the making that would be distinguished well into the 19th century. The family was Lyonnais, traditionally in pharmacy until Antoine achieved his medical degree. Their adoption of the particle dein the 18th century was self-improvement as the family was not noble. The original spelling had been Dejussieu.
