Abstract

The structure of tricarbonyl(4,6,8-trimethylazulene)chromium has been determined by 13C NMR studies and by a single-crystal X-ray analysis. The 13C NMR data of the azulene complexes are compared with those of tricarbonyl(6-dimethylaminofulvene)chromium, tricarbonyl(6,6-diphenylfulvene)chromium, and those of the non-coordinated ligands 4,6,8-trimethylazulene, 6-dimethylaminofulvene 6,6-diphenylfulvene. This investigation shows that the azulene ligand is coordinated to the Cr(CO) 3 group only via the five-membered ring. This is confirmed by the X-ray analysis. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2 1/ a with lattice constants a 1393.7(7), b1489.6(7), c 2757.8(13) pm; β 102.58(2)°; Z = 16. The final R index for 2535 observed reflections ( F > 3 σ) is 0.054.
