Abstract
A reliable diagnosis of soft rot is possible only by microscopical examination. A characteristic feature is the formation of cavities by hyphae in the secondary wall of tracheids and fibres. In order to ascertain the diagnostic value of this symptom. the author carried out light and electron microscopic investigations on the decomposition of lignified cell walls by soft rot fungi. The results are discussed in detail. 47 references. -- AATA
