Abstract

High-pressure liquid chromatography was successfully introduced in the undergraduate advanced organic chemistry laboratory to reinvestigate the cyanide-catalyzed condensation of benzaldehyde to benzoin. In addition to an increase in overall yield and purity of the product over the existing procedure the experiment provided the students with a practical hands-on introduction to modern HPLC and its application in process optimization.
