Abstract
Experiments were performed to study the effect of prostaglandin precursors, gamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid, on benzo(a)-pyrene and gamma-radiation induced genetic damage to bone marrow cells of mice. Gamma-linolenic acid but not arachidonic acid completely prevented and/or reversed benzo(a)pyrene induced genetic damage and prevented to a large extent the damage caused by gamma-radiation to bone marrow cells of mice. The protective action of gamma-linolenic acid is important clinically since it can be used both orally and parenterally and added to the diet.
