Abstract

A 57-year-old woman sought out the stomatology clinic, complaining of an asymptomatic nodule on the lip for six months. Intraoral examination showed a sessile nodule of firm consistency, purplish color, covered by intact mucosa, measuring approximately 8 × 5mm, in the upper right labial mucosa, close to the semi-mucosa and midline. Diascopy showed no ischemia, and aspiration puncture was negative for blood. The diagnostic hypotheses were venous thrombus and mesenchymal or glandular neoplasia. An excisional biopsy was performed with a transsurgical aspiration puncture, which was also negative for blood. Histopathological examination revealed a well-defined lesion containing numerous hyperemic blood vessels of varying calibers, permeated by fibrous connective tissue. A diagnosis of benign vascular lesion was established. No recurrence of the lesion was detected after one year. In some cases, diascopy and aspiration puncture may not help in the diagnosis of benign vascular lesions, especially in those with small-caliber vessels.
