Abstract

Abalone is a marine gastropod that is an important fishery and food industrial resource massively maricultured in Asia, Africa, Australia, and America. However, beneficial health effects of abalone have rarely been reported. In this study, we investigated the positive effects of gastrointestinal digests of abalone intestines on osteoblast differentiation in human osteosarcoma (MG-63) cells. The results showed that abalone intestine gastro-intestinal digests (AIGIDs) significantly increased activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), a phenotypic marker for early-stage of osteoblast differentiation and amount of hydroxyapatite in MG-63 cells. Furthermore, AIGIDs could promote bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) expression and osteoblast differentiation via mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) pathway. These results indicate that AIGIDs induce bone mineralization via osteoblastic differentiation. Therefore, gastrointestinal digests of abalone intestine as by-products from fishery manufacturing might suggest the possibility for high valuable utilization and application as nutraceutical and therapeutic substances.
