Abstract

AbstractThe boundary element method (BEM) is a commonly used tool in acoustics to calculate wave propagation and scattering. As for finite elements the stability of the BEM suffers if the thickness of the elements used in the discretization of the scatterer is very small. To deal with this problem special thin middle face elements have been designed. In this work we use these elements to model the acoustics of musical tubes (boomwhacker/Klangröhre), that are simple musical instruments for children. We briefly describe the integral equation for the thin elements and compare calculations using the BEM with thin elements with measurements of a tube tuned to the note ‘C’.
