Abstract
The enthalpies of mixing of liquid alloys in the system Ga-In were determined using a high-temperature calorimeter. The maximum value for ΔH max = 288 cal/g-atom was found to occur at 50 at.%. The melting equilibria were revised, by thermal analysis of numerous alloys over the entire concentration region. An evaluation of the phase diagram, using the measured enthalpies of mixing yielded values for the free enthalpies of mixing, the entropies of mixing, and the thermodynamic activities. The results were compared with thermodynamic data found in the literature. It could be shown that the enthalpies of mixing of liquid Ga-In alloys are determined by an appreciable atomic misfit in the melt as the result of the difference in atomic radii of the components, as well as by chemical bonding effects.
