Abstract
An “exact” geometrically non-linear analysis of cylindrical inflatables subjected to asymmetrically applied uniform longitudinal line loads and/or hydrostatic pressure loading caused by a ponding medium accumulating in a depression is presented. The analysis admits and treats the full range of possible vertical and lateral displacements. The results indicate that membranes under such loadings may collapse either laterally or vertically. The effects of load asymmetry, membrane extensibility and various support conditions on the load carrying capacity of such structures are examined in detail.
