Abstract
The hardware description by high level functional register transfer (RT) languages is widely accepted. However, this paper motivates the need for even higher level description means — a system level language. Such a language is a precondition for a high level computer support in the area of architectural design. Therefore we will present several description mechanisms necessary for a system level language, like abstract problem specification without anticipating typical architecture decisions, abstract problem dependent datatypes, and most important the modeling of uncertainties. These mechanisms are included in a new language, called ADL (architecture description language).
