Abstract

Estrogen hormones play an important regulatory role in the human body. They contribute to sexual differentiation, reproductive function and behavior, as well as to memory, neuronal survival, homeostasis and metabolic rate. The menopausal period in a woman's life is accompanied by changes associated with decreased levels of gonadal hormones. Decreased estrogen levels are considered to be one of the potential factors in the pathogenesis of affective disorders and cognitive dysfunctions. This review summarizes the available literature data on behavioral changes in animals with ovariectomy-induced estrogen deficit.
