Abstract

Reflection and refraction of a two-dimensional ion acoustic soliton through a space charge sheath area are experimentally investigated to show an incident soliton divides into two waves at the ion sheath edge: the reflected soliton and the refracted one. Reflection and refraction coefficients are a function of the velocity ratio of the refracted and incident soliton. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical ones to show fairly good agreement.
