Abstract

Science as well as many religious traditions are interested in the origins of life: how life emerged out of inorganic substances or dead matter. Whereas some scientists attempt to recreate the conditions of Earth as it was four billion years ago in an effort to understand how life emerged at that time from simple organic compounds, certain religious traditions take a more experiential approach, providing ways for participants to experience an encounter with a god-like power that embodies the concept of zoe, the eternal force of life that endures physical death. This article analyzes a dream from both a personal and archetypal perspective that expresses the concept of zoe as it was recognized by certain ancient spiritual traditions: as a bee emerging from dead matter, and as a bee goddess with the ability to provide an experience of immortality in the realm of mortal life.
