Abstract

A complex source location theory for the propagation and diffraction of a general class of beam waves is presented. This theory is a certain extension of Deschamps', suggested in 1971, to solve the problems of diffraction and scattering for the fundamental Gaussian beam mode incidence. It is shown that the theory is also involved in constituting a set of beam modes in free space. A few examples for Gaussian beam modes are given.
