Abstract

A computer program, RFQTRAK, tracks particles through a radiofrequency quadrupole accelerator using the finite element method to calculate the space and image charge forces. This program requires approximately 80 times the computing time of the program PARMTEQ, which does a similar tracking using a cruder space charge estimate and no image charges. Transmission of the CRNL RFQ1 accelerator as a function of beam current has been calculated with both programs to determine regions of disagreement where the increased computing time of RFQTRAK may be justified.
