Abstract

High resolution (350 Hz) measurements of hyperfine structure on the J=5, K=3 inversion transition in NH3 are reported. The average nitrogen quadrupole coupling strength is −393.90±0.08 kHz. This value is in excellent agreement with a value predicted by Hougen's theory describing distortion corrections to quadrupole coupling in NH3 and does not agree with a value calculated without the correction. The line center frequency and other hyperfine structure parameters are given.
