Abstract

Abstract Based on Forsbergh's experiment on the 90° laminar domain pattern in BaTiO3 crystal, a new type of bimorph actuator, BaTiO3 domain bimorph, was made and its properties were studied. By creating a large lateral strain in BaTiO3 crystal, this new type of actuator is able to produce a much larger displacement compared with the conventional piezoelectric bimorph with similar dimension. As a consequence, this new actuator has a higher loading ability as far as the displacement of the bimorph concerned. The experimental result also shows that the bimorph can be operated at least up to 1 KHz.
