Abstract

Bat visits were observed in Marcgravia myriostigma at Ubatuba, São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. This plant species presents a typical chiropterophilous syndrome: the inflorescences are pendulous, flowers nocturnal, whitish, lasting a single night and having an odor reminiscent of fresh cabbage. Nectar is produced in segregated, extrafloral nectaries. The blooming period last 4 to 6 months. Under natural conditions each inflorescence developed an unusually high number of fruits (1 fruit for each 2 flowers). Two phyllostomid bat species, Anoura caudifera and Glossophaga soricina , visited the inflorescences both from above and below. Marcgravia myriostigma may be an autogamous spocies but the mode of visitation by bats promotes outcrossing.
